5 Important Steps of Window Selection

kitchen windowsWhen your home needs new windows, you may be overwhelmed by the many choices. We carry reliable brands like Harvey and Andersen to make the selection process much easier. At SCI Windows, our team has decades of combined experience installing windows. Here are 5 important steps to help you choose the right windows for your home.

1. Select Window Type

What style of window best fits your needs? This first step is often the most challenging, since there are so many window types to choose from. Common ones include:

  • Awning: Hinged at the top, an awning window can be placed high to bring more light in.
  • Bay & Bow: These large window combinations project outward and around a home.
  • Casement: This window is hinged on the side and operated by crank, commonly placed above kitchen sinks.
  • Double-Hung: Perhaps the most common style, double-hung windows open up while remaining flush to the wall.
  • Gliding: With two sashes, one sash slides across the other to open a gliding window. They are a modern double-hung.
  • Stationary: This type of window, also known as a picture window, does not open.

Specialty windows are another option for homeowners who want a particular shape or dramatic angle. This window style is meant to make a statement on your home.

2. Choose the Glass

The glass chosen for your windows can maximize their performance and energy-efficiency. To many homeowners, insulation is an important factor in keeping the home cool or warm. There are three energy factors to consider:

  • U-Factor: On a scale of 0.25 to 1.25, U-Factor measures how well the glass retains heat. The lower the number, the better the product is at preventing heat loss.
  • Solar Heat Gain Coefficient: On a scale of 0 to 1, SHGC indicates how well heat from sunlight is blocked. Lower numbers are better.
  • Visible Transmittance: Also on a scale of 0 to 1, visible transmittance measures the amount of light the window lets through. In this case, higher numbers are better.

Not only can the right kind of glass provide proper insulation and filter out light, but it can also provide a clearer view.

3. Interior & Exterior Options

Determine what colors will complement your existing decor and home style. Many quality window providers allow you to choose an exterior and interior trim color, as well as a wood finish. If you’re looking to sell in the future, a unique look can give your home more curb appeal in a neighborhood of similar houses.

4. Customize Window Style

Looking to add character to your home? Create your own signature look with features like window grilles – decorative bars that divide a sheet of glass into smaller panes. Andersen offers a selection of grilles in a variety of patterns. Choose from standard, semi-custom and fully customized styles to add flair, divide light or make window cleaning an easier task.

5. Select Your Hardware

Custom hardware is a decorative accent that helps your windows truly stand out. In addition to functionality, window cranks can provide the classic or modern design you are looking to portray in your home. Choose from a variety of styles and finishes to complement your existing cabinet and door hardware.
